JUNE 2017

After all the excitement of Championships and the Presentation lunch, this month we had the great pleasure of presenting a cheque for $4000 to our charity, The Shirley Shuttle, made up to that amount by the donation of $500 from the Country Club. Pam Warton accepted the cheque on behalf of the organisation, which was bought to our attention by one of our long standing members, Colleen Guy who has been using this service over many of the past months, for transportation to treatment centres and specialist appointments.

This month the Club Medals were won by Patsy Elliott in division 1 (77 c/b) followed hot on her heels by Heather Burrett. Division 2 saw a very excited Jan Weiley on the microphone after winning her first medal (71), with Marg Hockley as runner up. Susan Bourne was top of the leaderboard in 3rd Division (71),with her good mate Carmel Brown the next place getter.  Also, this month we had a Par and 2B Par event, with Trish Melnik winning Division 1, Judy Andrews Division 2, and Lynette Magill Division 3. Irene Hyland and Jill Fraser won the 2B.

At the time of writing, we are up to the third round of the 2B Knockout, so good golfing to all participants.

The final day of the Interclub Matchplay had Everglades in with a chance to win the season, however this was not to be, and we were pipped at the post by Morisset , who also took out the Margin Shield. Congratulations to Morisset and also to all our women who competed so sportingly in their matches. Next year!

Next on our calendar is our Day of Golf on the 11th July, – the Everglades Salver, Bowl and Longmarkers Cup, sponsored by the House of Beauty at Woy Woy. Hopefully all your entries are in by now. Also, it’s now time for teams to be thinking about fabulous costumes for Xmas in July Mufti Day on July 27th – get sewing ladies!

Enjoy your golf and, appreciate your friendships.

JUNE 2017

APRIL 2017

Although this is the blog for April, it would be remiss not to mention Malcolm Glase Day played at the end of March in a Par and 2bbb vs Par round. Dr Glase has been sponsoring this day for a number of years, and many of our members in turn have been supporting his skills as a surgeon on their knees and hips – win win! Speaking of wins, congratulations to Kaye McKay, Carol Hartwell and Norma Harris who were ahead of the pack in their divisions, with Heather Burrett and Del Taylor winning the 2BBB.

Unfortunately for finalists Josie Cadden and Hien McManus, the Singles Knockout began on a rain soaked course. While there were not enough players to make up a comp for the daily event, these two intrepid women made the decision to go ahead with their match, which was ultimately decided on the 19th hole with Josie winning her first knockout. Well played.

There was a good turnout for the April Medal, (possibly because the rain had finally retreated), with 91 starters. Also, just to reiterate, as well as playing for the medal, other rounds such as the Goodwill Plate, the Golf NSW Medal and the Shoot Out are all running in the background for those who entered for these at Registration.

Once again Kaye Mckay was atop the leaderboard for Div 1 with a score of 71. Kaye mentioned in her speech, she was going through a ‘purple patch’ at the moment, that she hopes continues! Bobbie Moran won Div 2 with a score of 74, and Rhonda Barron (who is no stranger to the winners’ circle) headed up Div 3 with 73 nett. And, Gwen Gray achieved what most of us could only wish for – an eagle on the 15th hole.

The Everglades Open Charity Day once again thankfully sponsored by Peninsula Village was a great success with a starting field of 120 players from Everglades and other clubs from our district. The game was an Irish 4ball Stableford with each team member allowed an underarm throw out of trouble and a mulligan, interpreted on the day as a free shot – which I imagine all of us were grateful for! Robert Taylor and Shayden Binder did the honours for a $2 hit across the water on the 4th – thanks fellas. The 1st prize winners on the day were Rhonda Wright, Lynnette Magill, Fay Spence and Marg Murray with an amazing score way ahead of the field with 93 points.

We had an array of many marvellous prizes set out most attractively for the raffle, so with the combined proceeds from the raffle and the $2 fourth hole, thank you especially to Gary’s Leading Edge Jewellers of Woy Woy for providing us with a beautiful pendant, won to great excitement by Rhonda Barron. Thank you also to House of Beauty Jewel on the Glades for a generous voucher. Everglades Women’s Golf will be presenting our charity, Shirley’s Shuttle with a cheque upwards of $3,100 with more coming in – a wonderful result. Shirley’s Shuttle is a service on the Central Coast providing cancer patients with transport to attend treatment centres and appointments.

Easter Club Day was fun and thanks to President Donna for providing those of us who attended presentation with plenty of chocolates. Not many takers for golf this day, however the winners were grinners; no more so than Pat Clarke who was jubilant she had won her division after having to contend with second place so many times. Raelene Biddolph came top in Div 2 with Val Stanford winning in Div 3.

Commencing on Saturday 13th May, four lines will be made available each week on the Saturday time sheet at 12 to 12.30pm for our women members. You will also be able to ask a visitor or a man to play. Certainly a boon for the working woman, and those of us who would enjoy a game on Saturday.

Golf is a nice relaxing way to get really frustrated and, super disappointed in yourself’…

APRIL 2017

Welcome back ladies to the 2017 season, and may the golfing gods give us all, confidence and clarity to play great golf this year!

Opening Day was a great success fielding 92 players, with Wendy White, Carol Hartwell and Fran Slade winning their divisions. Refreshments at Presentation were most appreciated in the form of good old fashioned Pimms and lemonade decorated with various fruits (so you see, a health drink!), accompanied by cup cakes.
Jo Edwards from Edwards Butchers presented the prizes for the hotly contested Summer Cup, congratulations to Lyn McMurray claiming 1st prize, followed by El Presidente Donna, Caro Roope, Ann Meyn, Ann Radford and Heather Burrett. Well played ‘lovely’ ladies.

Also on the day, Vets President Lorraine presented gifts to Pat Myles and Life Member Irene Quintrell on attaining the status of octogenarians. Pat is still playing a very handy game of golf, often up on the winners podium. Patsy had a few extremely amusing words to say about Irene and herself in earlier times – great to hear.

Jan Monty was presented with a badge for a Hole-in-One, which she achieved on a Sunday – ‘goodonya’ Jan.img_2530

I’m sure we are all aware by now of the very exciting 60 years of Everglades celebrations coming up in early March, culminating in a cocktail party after the Men’s vs Women’s mixed event on Sunday 12th with a shotgun start at 8.30. Both committees encourage participation in the day, it will be great fun for all. Our women’s events on Tuesday 7th and Thursday 9th will be a combined 2B aggregate, (with a hope there will be quite a few golfing outfits of the fifties and sixties striding the fairways on the Thursday!)

img_2898Without  any thought to her personal safety, Maggie Coutts gallantly braved the waters on the 4th to retrieve her ball – and this is the result (sans glasses which are gone forever)!

The CCWGA Opening Day was held at Everglades on the 20th, the course was in great condition, as was noted by many players from other district clubs. The Stableford event with 2 scores to count was happily won by a home team – Gwen Gray, Ann Meyn, Jan Patterson and Cathy Yu with a score of 83.img_3085

On a very sad note, Murrell Jarvis passed away on February 8th. Murrell will be very much missed by all of us.💐

Good golfing, and, as a dj on Sydney radio used to say – ‘be kind to each other’.

November, and we’re now at the pointy end of 2016 (remember when we were kids, and a year seemed to last forever!), the continuous competition has finished and the Summer Cup has commenced.

The Vets Closing Day was held in, thankfully fine weather and was enjoyed by all, President Donna and the committee did a bang up job with the lunch and presentation of the prizes.
Congratulations to a very happy June Cooper, winner over the field. The age winners were young Di Voss in the Over 50’s, Gwen Gray Over 60’s, Irene Hyland Over 70’s and, a very young at heart Lorna Turner for the Over 80’s.

The course was a delightful sea of various shades of pink for our Pink Ribbon Day, one of the special days on our calendar. The four person ambrose, plus the pink survival ball made for a truly fun game and day. Thank also to Ann Kane for the effort she put in making decorations outside the proshop area. Feeling in the ‘pink’ were the winners Karen Myles, Maria McCarthy, Rhonda Wright and Marilyn McAlpine, followed in a very close second by Ann Radford, Margie Moxham, Sylvia Saunders and Yvonne Kerkin, and hot on their heels were Judy Andrews, Nelly Szelid, Judy Hocking and Caro Roope in 3rd place, with Sandy King, Lorraine George, Ros Ross and Dr Helena taking out 4th.

There have been a couple of tournaments played recently that our women have featured in, notably at the Women’s Country Meeting, Lyn McMurray was the Division One overall nett winner – atta girl! Also, the CCWGA Annual Tournament was held over two days at Toukley and Gosford with a large field of players, and our women again making their mark. Congratulations to Jan Monty who was the runner up for Division 3 in the 36 hole open championship, followed by Norma Harris in 3rd place and Cathy Byrne in 6th. Norma and Cathy also came 2nd in the 2B Aggregate.
In the Monday 18 hole Stroke event, Ann Kane for Division 2 was successful in winning the day, and Cathy Byrne in Division 3 Stableford gaining 3rd place, Cathy and Norma again featured in the 18hole 2B Aggregate with a win. Tuesday’s 18 hole event reaped successes also, with Jan Monty winning Division 3, and also runners up along with Margaret Coutts in the 2B Aggregate. Super play from our Everglades girls, and I’m sure they all have ‘lovely’ days.

Closing Day is coming up on the 24th, wear something ‘Christmassy’ if the mood grabs you. As this is also our final weekly presentation, there will be Christmas cheer in the form of bubbly and cake.

As always, our members and their families who have health issues are in our thoughts.

AGM time once more on the 20th October- the nomination forms for committee are in the ladies locker room, so if you would like to contribute to the running of women’s golf please fill out a form. It is most worthwhile and, satisfying. So go on – give it a go!

The CCWGA district charity day was held in August at Everglades this year, with Patsy Elliott winning a division 1 Stableford Brooch. Also in August we had a couple of fun games because of course renovations, one of the games being 3 clubs and a putter. How many of us realised after the game that we’ve probably got 10 too many clubs in the bag!

The September Medal sponsored by Bendigo Bank resulted in great scores for the winners – Div 1, Gwen Gray with 69, Div 2, Meg Warr 66 and Div 3, Maria McCarthy with an amazing 63.

Another event this month was the district Gwen Thompson Shield played in a 3BBB format at Wyong with an aggregate over 3 teams. This year was won by Everglades, (and it’s been a long time between drinks,) last won by us in 2005 I believe. Jan Monty, Fay Spence and Del Taylor – +9, Carmel Brown, Judy Shanks and Jenny Bourne – +7, Trish Melnik, Sylvia Saunders and Caro Roope – +3. Excellent golf.

The Club Foursomes Championships have now been completed, congrats to all competitors – 27 holes is a long walk! The forecast rain held off for the most part, and the sausage sandwiches this year after 18 holes were extremely tasty – so a good day was had by all. (I personally am talking about the company, not the golf!). The Star Room was set up beautifully for our drinks and presentation, with gorgeous flowers courtesy of Heather Burrett’s garden. Donna took on the Presidents role in the absence of Jan, who is doing it very tough at the moment, and I know all of us send our thoughts and best wishes to her.
Captain Wendy announced the winners as follows –

Division 1 Gross Winners Karen Myles & Lyn McMurray 121
Runners Up Pat Clarke & Ann Radford 127

Division 1 Nett Winners Jenny Simmons & Vicki Gray 105.75
Runners Up Raelene Biddolph & Di Voss 108.25

Division 2 Gross Winners Fay Spence & Marg Murray 151
Runners Up Jacquie Crawford & Del Taylor 154

Division 2 Nett Winners Rhonda Wright & Marilyn McAlpine 98.5
Runners Up Ann Crowe & Joan Forwood 106.50

18 Hole Event of the Day over the field – Pat Clarke & Ann Radford 63.5
9 Hole Event of the Day over the field – Rhonda Wright & Marilyn McAlpine 23.5.

The Shoot Out final will have been played by publication, but I’m sure all those who competed thoroughly enjoyed themselves, especially the champagne, for those that were eliminated after each hole.

And finally, I’m sure we have all noticed how adroitly Sandy King is matching her fabulous array of scarves to her golf outfits!

Until next time, enjoy your golf and your friendships.

August 2016

Firstly, could I say – I have now idea on how to make the photos a uniform size, so my apologies!

At the time of writing, it would appear that winter is behind us (well, here’s hoping), and we can look forward to fresh Spring days, playing supurb golf!
On our last Club Day I’m delighted to document that Pat Clarke had an Eagle on the 15th – in for 2, how about that! Pat was presented with an eagle badge by El Presidente Jan.image

We had the monthly medal sponsored by Bendigo Bank on the 4th and the winners on the day were Donna Mitchell Division 1 with a terrific nett score of 69, Jan Patterson Division 2 with 72, and Pat Myles Division 3 with 74. As usual, well done ladies.

The other golf day of note this month was Death by Chocolate, and we are grateful of the sponsorship of Brian Reid Coastal Funerals. President Jan had a goody bag of chocolate delights handed out to those who attended presentation. It was a Par round (possibly not the most popular game we play during the year!), and a 2BBB. Division 1 was won by Anne Kane on a countback to Sandy King with a score of +1, followed by Helen Ferguson winning Division 2 with an excellent score of +5, and +2 for Jan Johnson in Division 3. Presentation boxes of chocs gratefully received by all.

The 2BBB was also won on a countback by Debbie Smith & Raelene Biddolph, with runners up Lynette Magill & Helen Ferguson on a score of +8. Unfortunately, no pictures are available of these 4 ladies, perhaps they prefer to remain mysterious!

The entries for the Club Foursomes Championships on Sept 22 are now open. The price is $20 each, either to Coral or in an envelope along with the name of your partner.

To those of our members who have suffered illness or loss this month, our thoughts are with you.
