AGM time once more on the 20th October- the nomination forms for committee are in the ladies locker room, so if you would like to contribute to the running of women’s golf please fill out a form. It is most worthwhile and, satisfying. So go on – give it a go!

The CCWGA district charity day was held in August at Everglades this year, with Patsy Elliott winning a division 1 Stableford Brooch. Also in August we had a couple of fun games because of course renovations, one of the games being 3 clubs and a putter. How many of us realised after the game that we’ve probably got 10 too many clubs in the bag!

The September Medal sponsored by Bendigo Bank resulted in great scores for the winners – Div 1, Gwen Gray with 69, Div 2, Meg Warr 66 and Div 3, Maria McCarthy with an amazing 63.

Another event this month was the district Gwen Thompson Shield played in a 3BBB format at Wyong with an aggregate over 3 teams. This year was won by Everglades, (and it’s been a long time between drinks,) last won by us in 2005 I believe. Jan Monty, Fay Spence and Del Taylor – +9, Carmel Brown, Judy Shanks and Jenny Bourne – +7, Trish Melnik, Sylvia Saunders and Caro Roope – +3. Excellent golf.

The Club Foursomes Championships have now been completed, congrats to all competitors – 27 holes is a long walk! The forecast rain held off for the most part, and the sausage sandwiches this year after 18 holes were extremely tasty – so a good day was had by all. (I personally am talking about the company, not the golf!). The Star Room was set up beautifully for our drinks and presentation, with gorgeous flowers courtesy of Heather Burrett’s garden. Donna took on the Presidents role in the absence of Jan, who is doing it very tough at the moment, and I know all of us send our thoughts and best wishes to her.
Captain Wendy announced the winners as follows –

Division 1 Gross Winners Karen Myles & Lyn McMurray 121
Runners Up Pat Clarke & Ann Radford 127

Division 1 Nett Winners Jenny Simmons & Vicki Gray 105.75
Runners Up Raelene Biddolph & Di Voss 108.25

Division 2 Gross Winners Fay Spence & Marg Murray 151
Runners Up Jacquie Crawford & Del Taylor 154

Division 2 Nett Winners Rhonda Wright & Marilyn McAlpine 98.5
Runners Up Ann Crowe & Joan Forwood 106.50

18 Hole Event of the Day over the field – Pat Clarke & Ann Radford 63.5
9 Hole Event of the Day over the field – Rhonda Wright & Marilyn McAlpine 23.5.

The Shoot Out final will have been played by publication, but I’m sure all those who competed thoroughly enjoyed themselves, especially the champagne, for those that were eliminated after each hole.

And finally, I’m sure we have all noticed how adroitly Sandy King is matching her fabulous array of scarves to her golf outfits!

Until next time, enjoy your golf and your friendships.

August 2016

Firstly, could I say – I have now idea on how to make the photos a uniform size, so my apologies!

At the time of writing, it would appear that winter is behind us (well, here’s hoping), and we can look forward to fresh Spring days, playing supurb golf!
On our last Club Day I’m delighted to document that Pat Clarke had an Eagle on the 15th – in for 2, how about that! Pat was presented with an eagle badge by El Presidente Jan.image

We had the monthly medal sponsored by Bendigo Bank on the 4th and the winners on the day were Donna Mitchell Division 1 with a terrific nett score of 69, Jan Patterson Division 2 with 72, and Pat Myles Division 3 with 74. As usual, well done ladies.

The other golf day of note this month was Death by Chocolate, and we are grateful of the sponsorship of Brian Reid Coastal Funerals. President Jan had a goody bag of chocolate delights handed out to those who attended presentation. It was a Par round (possibly not the most popular game we play during the year!), and a 2BBB. Division 1 was won by Anne Kane on a countback to Sandy King with a score of +1, followed by Helen Ferguson winning Division 2 with an excellent score of +5, and +2 for Jan Johnson in Division 3. Presentation boxes of chocs gratefully received by all.

The 2BBB was also won on a countback by Debbie Smith & Raelene Biddolph, with runners up Lynette Magill & Helen Ferguson on a score of +8. Unfortunately, no pictures are available of these 4 ladies, perhaps they prefer to remain mysterious!

The entries for the Club Foursomes Championships on Sept 22 are now open. The price is $20 each, either to Coral or in an envelope along with the name of your partner.

To those of our members who have suffered illness or loss this month, our thoughts are with you.

July 2016

Mufti Day – held in the middle of the year for the first time. The game played was a 4 person dropout ambrose, (of course, not implying the players were dropouts), and the winners on a count back with a score of 62 and a half’ish’, were Dr. Helena, Lisa Swan, Lorraine George & Jill Fraser. The runners up Coral Walker, Pat Clarke, Mon Capitan & Heather Burrett. As the name implies, it is a dress up day, and the theme was ‘anything but golf gear’, – what can be said, I’ll let the pictures speak for themselves! The bridal party were the costume winners on the day – what an attractive group!

The heavens opened this month on our Day of Golf consequently resulting in a much reduced field;  however, probably channeling that great Eric Clapton song – ‘Let it Rain’, 51 brave women battled the elements for the 2016 Everglades Salver, Bowl & Longmarkers Cup. Yvonne Boardman from Toukley won the Salver with a great score of 83 gross (she plays off 1!), our own Marg Murray took home the Bowl with a score of 99 gross, and Dee Barham from Breakers won the Longmarkers Cup with a stableford score of 36. Quite a few stayed for the presentation of the trophies, which was terrific.

The rain persisted two days later, therefore the July medal was postponed to the following week, but still 28 women donned the wet weather gear and swung the clubs for 18 holes (or less) – it is an outdoor sport!
With the Medal round finally played, albeit a reduced field of 64, the Division1 winner was Trish Melnik with a score of 72, as was the winner of Division 2 Judy Shanks. Also with 72, Lynette Magill for Division 3. Goodonya girls.

Again,…in the rain and a small field of 33, Thursday 21st the 3BBB par was also a qualifying round for the Gwen Thompson Shield and the team this year playing for the shield at Wyong in September will be Trish Melnik, Sylvia Saunders & Caro Roope – let’s hope the Shield ends up in the trophy cabinet at Everglades.
We’re now at the pointy end of the 2B Knockout with Lynette Magill & Cathy Byrne playing Marg Hockley & Val Stanford – good golfing to all.
Also a reminder of the CCWGA District Charity Day @ Everglades on August 22nd. You will have to qualify on July 28 to play this event.
The Women’s Country Meeting this year put on by Golf NSW is from 5th to the 8th September. Monday 5th Sept at Shelly Beach GC, Tuesday 6th Sept at Wyong GC, and Thursday 8th Sept at Magenta Shores. It will cost $50 each game. Go to the Golf NSW website for details of this event.
That’s it for another month, and if you’re off travelling for a time, don’t forget,…Everglades is your spiritual home.

JUNE 2016

‘Tempus fugit’ – or, for those of us who don’t speak Latin … Time flies! Where did the first half of 2016 get to?

June began with the Bendigo Bank monthly medal, also incorporating the 4th round of the Golf NSW medal and the shootout, so a lot to play for each month – no pressure!
Division 1 winner was Karen Myles, for Division 2 Maureen Muncey and Rhonda Barron came up trumps for Division 3. Well played to these women.

Pennants on Monday 6th was a complete washout, thanks to the atrocious ‘east coast low’ that hit NSW that weekend. We have one more round to play, but, unfortunately despite the tremendous enthusiasm and effort by all our players no trophies for Everglades this year.

Halfway through the month we played a par and 2ball vs par game which was also a qualifier for the GOLF NSW Fourball Championship, terrific play by Kaye Mckay and Judy Andrews will see them representing Everglades in the final, played at Shelly Beach in October. The individual division winners on the day were – Kaye McKay, Mon Capitan and Cathy Byrne.

I think the following will resonate with all of our members, and thank you to Ann Woods for sending it on:-
A Group of Girlfriends

A group of girlfriends, all age 40, discussed where they should meet for lunch. Finally it was agreed that they would meet at the Ocean View restaurant because the waiters there had tight pants and nice buns.
10 years later, at age 50, the friends once again discussed where they should meet for lunch. Finally it was agreed that they would meet at the Ocean View restaurant, because the food was good and the wine selection was excellent.
10 years later, at age 60, the friends again discussed where they should meet for lunch. Finally it was agreed that they would meet at the Ocean View restaurant, because they could dine in peace and quiet and the restaurant had a beautiful view of the ocean.
10 years later, at age 70, the friends discussed where they should meet for lunch. Finally it was agreed that they would meet at the Ocean View restaurant, because the restaurant was wheelchair accessible and had an elevator.
10 years later, at 80 years of age, the friends again discussed where they should meet for lunch. Finally it was agreed that they would meet at the Ocean View restaurant, because they had never been there before.

Enjoy your friends and your golf.

May 2016

My apologies for the tardiness in posting the May blog – time just gets away!

On Thursday April 28, President Jan on behalf of Everglades women’s golf was delighted to present $1000 worth of pantry and household goods to the Umina Salvation Army for the use of families in need on the Peninsula.Sal Army1

As I’m sure you are all aware, our Club Championships began on Tuesday 3rd May to blue sunny skies that continued onto the 2nd round on Thursday and the 3rd and final round the following Tuesday. Nerves were not outwardly evident, however both the practice nets and putting greens were given a more than usual workout for the three rounds!  The Thursday was also our medal round for this month. Well done to Lyn McMurray, Raelene Biddolph and Rhonda Barron for winning medals in their respective divisions. The last day of the Champs was our Ambrose/American Foursomes ‘fun day’. This day proved very popular with our members both this year and in 2015 with 104 entrants for the day. The happy winners were Hien McManus & Peggy Mitchell – well played ladies.

The luncheon that followed was well received, and a thank you to Everglades staff who prepared and served us (always with good grace). President Jan set up the prizes table with a fabulous gladioli display.

The Championships once again were sponsored by Umina Podiatry, represented by an always smiling Damian presenting the trophies. Apart from a few, most of our winners were not aware of their achievement until their name was announced by Mon Capitan, resulting in very surprised and happy women.

Our Club Champion for 2016 was Karen Myles with a score of 261, after a hotly contested 3 hole playoff with Sylvia Saunders .  This is the 8th year Karen has won this event – a stunning achievement by anyone’s standards. Gross Runner up was Lyn McMurray with a score of 268.

Division 2 Gross winner was well by deserved Judy Shanks posting a score of 303, with Irene Hyland runner up on a c/b of 321.

The Division 3 gross was won by a most surprised and mighty happy Carmel Brown, with a score of 343. Coral Walker on a score of 345 on a c/b was runner up.

The Nett for 54 holes in Division 1 was deservedly won by Sylvia Saunders (228), with a new member, Stephanie Rapmund runner up (229), a jubilant Judy Andrews topped Division 2 (231), and Jan Patterson was runner up (237 c/b). Meryll Mead topped the Division 3 leaderboard (236), with runner up Ann Crowe (241). At the time of this blog post, I do not have photos of the nett winners, but I will rectify this a sap.

The weather appears to be a bit more brisk in the morning, so I guess it’s now time to pack away those shorts, get the long pants out, air those jumpers and buy a packet of hand warmers at the chemist.

Keep enjoying your friends and your golf.

April 2016

Presentation of chocolates for Easter was highlighted by President Jan in her ‘bunny ears’ and as you can see by the pictures she is able to carry off with great aplomb and a little amusement!  Winners on the day – Pat Clarke Div 1, Jan Weiley Div 2 and Denise Manfredotti Div 3.

April kicked off with the Bendigo Bank Monthly Medal, Div 1 was won by a very happy Kaye Mckay with a terrific score of 69, and as an added bonus Kaye also won the Goodwill Plate, which puts her in the running to become the NSW Winner. This is determined by the number of strokes (if any), the nett result is under the AWCR of the course on the day of play.  Goodonya Kaye.  The winner of Div 2 was Maureen Muncey, (69) who also won the March medal – 2 in a row!   A great effort Maureen. Another extremely happy winner was Robyn Taylor in Div 3 (72), this is Robyn’s first medal.

Pennants has started for the year, with rounds 1 and 2 unable to produce a team victory, however in the 3rd round Banksia had a win and Wattle squared – so we’re on the up and up – go Everglades.

Everglades Open Invitation Day was a great success with 176 starters for the day, 88 in the morning field and 88 in the afternoon field. Unfortunately those of us who played in the morning copped a drenching for a few holes, which made playing fabulous golf shots challenging! But as golfers we are ever dauntless, – we soldiered on with little complaint (I say that mockingly!)  President Jan, Mon Capitan Wendy and  the committee made the day appear seamless, and the spread for both morning and afternoon tea was tremendous. The winners at both sessions were won by visitors, and congratulations to both teams, hopefully that ensures they will be back next year. Everglades got a 3rd in the morning and a 2nd and 3rd in the afternoon.

Charity Day was greeted by a cloudy sky – no rain though.  142 starters for the day – 84 men and 58 women. The winners were announced at a presentation at the end of play. The team event with a score of 94 was won by Leonie Wheeler, Lynette Magill, Carol Hartwell and, (a ring in) Darrin Turner. Leonie Wheeler held off the field in Div 1 with a score of 39, and Nina Skripkina in Div 2 scoring 40 points. Marg Hockley was the lucky winner of the BBQ in the Charity Raffle, and Pat Myles winning a round of golf at Kooindah Waters.

Tat tah  ‘til next time.

MARCH 2016

Welcome ladies to this months blog –

March began with the 2nd round of the singles KO, and now we are at the pointy end with two players left to provide an outcome on Tuesday 22nd. Play well Bobbi Moran and Pat Myles.

Bendigo Bank March Club Medal – Congratulations to Donna Mitchell in Div 1, Maureen Muncey in Div 2 and Pat Myles in Div 3 for being winners on the day. image

No it’s not the Bobbsy twins – Donna’s the one with the tan, on the right!

Sweltering through an unseasonably hot March, our ladies looked resplendent in this years new shirts for Club Day. Congrats to the winners on the day – Patsy Elliott in Div 1, Heather Burrett in Div 2 and Rhonda Wright (one of our newer ladies) in Div 3.

The Pennant teams for this year have now been decided, with the first matches to be played on April 4.  The CCWGA has embarked on a new format in the hope of making it a more level playing field, (or should that be fairway?) There are two teams, each with a combined handicap of no less than 130, so every grade is included. Good luck and good golf to all our players – bring it home girls!

Invitation/Open Day is on Tuesday 12th April so do invite your golfing friends from other clubs to join us on the day.

Enjoy your friends, and your golf…. always.
