APRIL 2017

Although this is the blog for April, it would be remiss not to mention Malcolm Glase Day played at the end of March in a Par and 2bbb vs Par round. Dr Glase has been sponsoring this day for a number of years, and many of our members in turn have been supporting his skills as a surgeon on their knees and hips – win win! Speaking of wins, congratulations to Kaye McKay, Carol Hartwell and Norma Harris who were ahead of the pack in their divisions, with Heather Burrett and Del Taylor winning the 2BBB.

Unfortunately for finalists Josie Cadden and Hien McManus, the Singles Knockout began on a rain soaked course. While there were not enough players to make up a comp for the daily event, these two intrepid women made the decision to go ahead with their match, which was ultimately decided on the 19th hole with Josie winning her first knockout. Well played.

There was a good turnout for the April Medal, (possibly because the rain had finally retreated), with 91 starters. Also, just to reiterate, as well as playing for the medal, other rounds such as the Goodwill Plate, the Golf NSW Medal and the Shoot Out are all running in the background for those who entered for these at Registration.

Once again Kaye Mckay was atop the leaderboard for Div 1 with a score of 71. Kaye mentioned in her speech, she was going through a ‘purple patch’ at the moment, that she hopes continues! Bobbie Moran won Div 2 with a score of 74, and Rhonda Barron (who is no stranger to the winners’ circle) headed up Div 3 with 73 nett. And, Gwen Gray achieved what most of us could only wish for – an eagle on the 15th hole.

The Everglades Open Charity Day once again thankfully sponsored by Peninsula Village was a great success with a starting field of 120 players from Everglades and other clubs from our district. The game was an Irish 4ball Stableford with each team member allowed an underarm throw out of trouble and a mulligan, interpreted on the day as a free shot – which I imagine all of us were grateful for! Robert Taylor and Shayden Binder did the honours for a $2 hit across the water on the 4th – thanks fellas. The 1st prize winners on the day were Rhonda Wright, Lynnette Magill, Fay Spence and Marg Murray with an amazing score way ahead of the field with 93 points.

We had an array of many marvellous prizes set out most attractively for the raffle, so with the combined proceeds from the raffle and the $2 fourth hole, thank you especially to Gary’s Leading Edge Jewellers of Woy Woy for providing us with a beautiful pendant, won to great excitement by Rhonda Barron. Thank you also to House of Beauty Jewel on the Glades for a generous voucher. Everglades Women’s Golf will be presenting our charity, Shirley’s Shuttle with a cheque upwards of $3,100 with more coming in – a wonderful result. Shirley’s Shuttle is a service on the Central Coast providing cancer patients with transport to attend treatment centres and appointments.

Easter Club Day was fun and thanks to President Donna for providing those of us who attended presentation with plenty of chocolates. Not many takers for golf this day, however the winners were grinners; no more so than Pat Clarke who was jubilant she had won her division after having to contend with second place so many times. Raelene Biddolph came top in Div 2 with Val Stanford winning in Div 3.

Commencing on Saturday 13th May, four lines will be made available each week on the Saturday time sheet at 12 to 12.30pm for our women members. You will also be able to ask a visitor or a man to play. Certainly a boon for the working woman, and those of us who would enjoy a game on Saturday.

Golf is a nice relaxing way to get really frustrated and, super disappointed in yourself’…

NOVEMBER 2016

November, and we’re now at the pointy end of 2016 (remember when we were kids, and a year seemed to last forever!), the continuous competition has finished and the Summer Cup has commenced.

The Vets Closing Day was held in, thankfully fine weather and was enjoyed by all, President Donna and the committee did a bang up job with the lunch and presentation of the prizes.
Congratulations to a very happy June Cooper, winner over the field. The age winners were young Di Voss in the Over 50’s, Gwen Gray Over 60’s, Irene Hyland Over 70’s and, a very young at heart Lorna Turner for the Over 80’s.

The course was a delightful sea of various shades of pink for our Pink Ribbon Day, one of the special days on our calendar. The four person ambrose, plus the pink survival ball made for a truly fun game and day. Thank also to Ann Kane for the effort she put in making decorations outside the proshop area. Feeling in the ‘pink’ were the winners Karen Myles, Maria McCarthy, Rhonda Wright and Marilyn McAlpine, followed in a very close second by Ann Radford, Margie Moxham, Sylvia Saunders and Yvonne Kerkin, and hot on their heels were Judy Andrews, Nelly Szelid, Judy Hocking and Caro Roope in 3rd place, with Sandy King, Lorraine George, Ros Ross and Dr Helena taking out 4th.

There have been a couple of tournaments played recently that our women have featured in, notably at the Women’s Country Meeting, Lyn McMurray was the Division One overall nett winner – atta girl! Also, the CCWGA Annual Tournament was held over two days at Toukley and Gosford with a large field of players, and our women again making their mark. Congratulations to Jan Monty who was the runner up for Division 3 in the 36 hole open championship, followed by Norma Harris in 3rd place and Cathy Byrne in 6th. Norma and Cathy also came 2nd in the 2B Aggregate.
In the Monday 18 hole Stroke event, Ann Kane for Division 2 was successful in winning the day, and Cathy Byrne in Division 3 Stableford gaining 3rd place, Cathy and Norma again featured in the 18hole 2B Aggregate with a win. Tuesday’s 18 hole event reaped successes also, with Jan Monty winning Division 3, and also runners up along with Margaret Coutts in the 2B Aggregate. Super play from our Everglades girls, and I’m sure they all have ‘lovely’ days.

Closing Day is coming up on the 24th, wear something ‘Christmassy’ if the mood grabs you. As this is also our final weekly presentation, there will be Christmas cheer in the form of bubbly and cake.

As always, our members and their families who have health issues are in our thoughts.

Mufti Day – Thursday 26 November

You could say it was hot! The mercury reached 38 celsius (100 degrees).  Thankfully it was decided by President Jan, costumes need not be worn on the course, however there were those that had no shorts to change into, so those brave souls soldiered on with good grace. Needless to say, the air conditioning inside the clubhouse was most welcome, as was the wonderful champagne punch and fruit cake, again organised and served by Donna, a fitting end to our Closing Day for the year.

The game was a 4 person waltz stableford won with a score of 89 by Ann Kane, Jan Patterson, Cathy Yu and Jackie Moore, closely followed in second place with a score of 88 by Maureen Botha, Ann Crowe, Vena Kennedy and Tina Lane, who also won the prize for best costume.
