JUNE 2017

After all the excitement of Championships and the Presentation lunch, this month we had the great pleasure of presenting a cheque for $4000 to our charity, The Shirley Shuttle, made up to that amount by the donation of $500 from the Country Club. Pam Warton accepted the cheque on behalf of the organisation, which was bought to our attention by one of our long standing members, Colleen Guy who has been using this service over many of the past months, for transportation to treatment centres and specialist appointments.

This month the Club Medals were won by Patsy Elliott in division 1 (77 c/b) followed hot on her heels by Heather Burrett. Division 2 saw a very excited Jan Weiley on the microphone after winning her first medal (71), with Marg Hockley as runner up. Susan Bourne was top of the leaderboard in 3rd Division (71),with her good mate Carmel Brown the next place getter.  Also, this month we had a Par and 2B Par event, with Trish Melnik winning Division 1, Judy Andrews Division 2, and Lynette Magill Division 3. Irene Hyland and Jill Fraser won the 2B.

At the time of writing, we are up to the third round of the 2B Knockout, so good golfing to all participants.

The final day of the Interclub Matchplay had Everglades in with a chance to win the season, however this was not to be, and we were pipped at the post by Morisset , who also took out the Margin Shield. Congratulations to Morisset and also to all our women who competed so sportingly in their matches. Next year!

Next on our calendar is our Day of Golf on the 11th July, – the Everglades Salver, Bowl and Longmarkers Cup, sponsored by the House of Beauty at Woy Woy. Hopefully all your entries are in by now. Also, it’s now time for teams to be thinking about fabulous costumes for Xmas in July Mufti Day on July 27th – get sewing ladies!

Enjoy your golf and, appreciate your friendships.

JUNE 2017

Welcome back ladies to the 2017 season, and may the golfing gods give us all, confidence and clarity to play great golf this year!

Opening Day was a great success fielding 92 players, with Wendy White, Carol Hartwell and Fran Slade winning their divisions. Refreshments at Presentation were most appreciated in the form of good old fashioned Pimms and lemonade decorated with various fruits (so you see, a health drink!), accompanied by cup cakes.
Jo Edwards from Edwards Butchers presented the prizes for the hotly contested Summer Cup, congratulations to Lyn McMurray claiming 1st prize, followed by El Presidente Donna, Caro Roope, Ann Meyn, Ann Radford and Heather Burrett. Well played ‘lovely’ ladies.

Also on the day, Vets President Lorraine presented gifts to Pat Myles and Life Member Irene Quintrell on attaining the status of octogenarians. Pat is still playing a very handy game of golf, often up on the winners podium. Patsy had a few extremely amusing words to say about Irene and herself in earlier times – great to hear.

Jan Monty was presented with a badge for a Hole-in-One, which she achieved on a Sunday – ‘goodonya’ Jan.img_2530

I’m sure we are all aware by now of the very exciting 60 years of Everglades celebrations coming up in early March, culminating in a cocktail party after the Men’s vs Women’s mixed event on Sunday 12th with a shotgun start at 8.30. Both committees encourage participation in the day, it will be great fun for all. Our women’s events on Tuesday 7th and Thursday 9th will be a combined 2B aggregate, (with a hope there will be quite a few golfing outfits of the fifties and sixties striding the fairways on the Thursday!)

img_2898Without  any thought to her personal safety, Maggie Coutts gallantly braved the waters on the 4th to retrieve her ball – and this is the result (sans glasses which are gone forever)!

The CCWGA Opening Day was held at Everglades on the 20th, the course was in great condition, as was noted by many players from other district clubs. The Stableford event with 2 scores to count was happily won by a home team – Gwen Gray, Ann Meyn, Jan Patterson and Cathy Yu with a score of 83.img_3085

On a very sad note, Murrell Jarvis passed away on February 8th. Murrell will be very much missed by all of us.💐

Good golfing, and, as a dj on Sydney radio used to say – ‘be kind to each other’.

October 2016

Hi Ladies,
Apart from the eagerly anticipated Vets Closing Day on the 25th, October is the month we start to wind down all the ‘serious’ games, and look forward to team events such as the very worthy Pink Ribbon Day, so even if you don’t have an ounce of pink in the wardrobe, please at least give a nod to the day with some token of pink, – you never know, it may be your colour!
Earlier in the month the Medal of Medals for the medal winners over 7 rounds during the year was played within a stroke round, with Pat Myles emerging as the ultimate winner on the day. Pat will be presented with her trophy at our Presentation Day on December 1st. The winners in the event of the day were Denise Dickson Div 1, Jan Weiley Div 2, and this is Jan’s first medal, and Pat Myles for Div3.

Captains vs Presidents Day – what a day for the Reds. After a drought of four years, the Presidents team romped home with a resounding well deserved win, most satisfying for President Jan in her final event as president- there was joy in the land! Congratulations to all who participated, it’s always a fun day.img_2677

The new committee for 2017 was finalised at this years AGM held on October 20th. Leslie Wells and Margaret Hockley stepped down after great service and dedication to our committee. Our new President Donna, welcomed Sharon Smith into the Secretary’s chair, and Lorraine Linnert, who will be fulfilling the role of Vice President and the Vets Delegate.

In view that the wind seems to have been blowing incessantly for months – remember when you’re out there on the fairway’- if it’s breezy, swing it easy’….

August 2016

Firstly, could I say – I have now idea on how to make the photos a uniform size, so my apologies!

At the time of writing, it would appear that winter is behind us (well, here’s hoping), and we can look forward to fresh Spring days, playing supurb golf!
On our last Club Day I’m delighted to document that Pat Clarke had an Eagle on the 15th – in for 2, how about that! Pat was presented with an eagle badge by El Presidente Jan.image

We had the monthly medal sponsored by Bendigo Bank on the 4th and the winners on the day were Donna Mitchell Division 1 with a terrific nett score of 69, Jan Patterson Division 2 with 72, and Pat Myles Division 3 with 74. As usual, well done ladies.

The other golf day of note this month was Death by Chocolate, and we are grateful of the sponsorship of Brian Reid Coastal Funerals. President Jan had a goody bag of chocolate delights handed out to those who attended presentation. It was a Par round (possibly not the most popular game we play during the year!), and a 2BBB. Division 1 was won by Anne Kane on a countback to Sandy King with a score of +1, followed by Helen Ferguson winning Division 2 with an excellent score of +5, and +2 for Jan Johnson in Division 3. Presentation boxes of chocs gratefully received by all.

The 2BBB was also won on a countback by Debbie Smith & Raelene Biddolph, with runners up Lynette Magill & Helen Ferguson on a score of +8. Unfortunately, no pictures are available of these 4 ladies, perhaps they prefer to remain mysterious!

The entries for the Club Foursomes Championships on Sept 22 are now open. The price is $20 each, either to Coral or in an envelope along with the name of your partner.

To those of our members who have suffered illness or loss this month, our thoughts are with you.

JUNE 2016

‘Tempus fugit’ – or, for those of us who don’t speak Latin … Time flies! Where did the first half of 2016 get to?

June began with the Bendigo Bank monthly medal, also incorporating the 4th round of the Golf NSW medal and the shootout, so a lot to play for each month – no pressure!
Division 1 winner was Karen Myles, for Division 2 Maureen Muncey and Rhonda Barron came up trumps for Division 3. Well played to these women.

Pennants on Monday 6th was a complete washout, thanks to the atrocious ‘east coast low’ that hit NSW that weekend. We have one more round to play, but, unfortunately despite the tremendous enthusiasm and effort by all our players no trophies for Everglades this year.

Halfway through the month we played a par and 2ball vs par game which was also a qualifier for the GOLF NSW Fourball Championship, terrific play by Kaye Mckay and Judy Andrews will see them representing Everglades in the final, played at Shelly Beach in October. The individual division winners on the day were – Kaye McKay, Mon Capitan and Cathy Byrne.

I think the following will resonate with all of our members, and thank you to Ann Woods for sending it on:-
A Group of Girlfriends

A group of girlfriends, all age 40, discussed where they should meet for lunch. Finally it was agreed that they would meet at the Ocean View restaurant because the waiters there had tight pants and nice buns.
10 years later, at age 50, the friends once again discussed where they should meet for lunch. Finally it was agreed that they would meet at the Ocean View restaurant, because the food was good and the wine selection was excellent.
10 years later, at age 60, the friends again discussed where they should meet for lunch. Finally it was agreed that they would meet at the Ocean View restaurant, because they could dine in peace and quiet and the restaurant had a beautiful view of the ocean.
10 years later, at age 70, the friends discussed where they should meet for lunch. Finally it was agreed that they would meet at the Ocean View restaurant, because the restaurant was wheelchair accessible and had an elevator.
10 years later, at 80 years of age, the friends again discussed where they should meet for lunch. Finally it was agreed that they would meet at the Ocean View restaurant, because they had never been there before.

Enjoy your friends and your golf.

February 2016

Welcome back ladies to the 2016 golfing year which, owing to ‘lousy’ weather our opening day began a week later with much enthusiasm by all our members who played on the day.

It was good to be at Presentation again, and warmly welcomed by President Jan & Mon Capitan Wendy, and suitably oiled with champagne and chocolates dispensed by Donna.

As always, the first order of business at the beginning of year is the presentation of the Summer Cup, generously sponsored by Edwards Butchers. Our winner this year (by a country mile) is Gwen Gray – congrats Gwen on your great play. The prizes were presented by Jo Edwards.

There are also a couple of milestones this year – we all congratulate Jan Binstead for her 40 year membership of Everglades, and to Lois Elworthy who is now an octogenarian… great going Lois.

If you have put your name down for Pennants this year now is the time to either bone up or refresh yourself on the art and the rules of match play. There are plenty of members who have pennants experience and would be happy to help.

Slightly different this year, in putting your name on the sheet for a medal round. Please fill out across (not down) the line in your division.

All those who qualified for the Singles Knockout – enjoy your game and play well.

It may seem a little early in mentioning our Open/Invitation Day (April 12), but it would be great to have many visitors, so get a team organised in plenty of time.

Enjoy your golf and have fun.
