MAY 2017

Finally; – this month, the rain went elsewhere, bringing joy to a golfers heart!

We began May with the main event on our golfing calendar, the Club Championships. 75 women stepped out onto the course with high hopes of hitting straight and true, with putts finding the hole! – Oh well…

Nevertheless, after three rounds, rising above the pack were these winners.-
Our Club Champion this year was a jubilant Gwen Gray with 258 gross. Karen Myles (264) was runner up in Division 1. Denise Dickson came up trumps as the Division 2 Gross Champion with a score of 301, followed hot on her heels by runner up Ann Kane (302). Division 3’s Gross Champion this year is Pat Myles with 327, and Rhonda Barron was runner up with 333. Fantastic play by these women.

The 54 Hole Nett winners for 2017 were Division 1’s (most delighted) Pat Clarke (225), and runner up Trish Melnik (229). The (excited) winner of Division 2 was Ros Ross (230), and (a bemused) Stella Hunter was the winner of Division 3 (229), Merryll Mead was runner up on a countback (244). Congratulations to all.

The Vets Championship is also run over the first two rounds in conjunction, the Vets Gross Champion this year is Gwen Gray in Division 1(171), with Karen Myles a close runner up (172). Trish Melnik topped the nett with 149 points, Mella Weatherstone, runner up with 152 points.
Linda Birrell was Vets Champion in Division 2 (193), and Ann Kane runner up (198). Nett winner in Division 2 with 152 points was Jackie Crawford, followed closely by runner up Marg Murray who had 153 points.
The Division 3 Vets Champion was Pat Myles (220), with Rhonda Barron (221) very close behind. The Nett winner was Stella Hunter (156 points), and Jan Monty runner up (159 points). All pretty great for a bunch of ‘old birds’!!

The culmination of our Champs saw us playing a most amusing Ambrose (9holes)/Foursomes (9holes). There appeared to be some confusion through the ranks re the playing of this game, which caused Captain Wendy to muse that we may have to rethink the format next year!

The beautifully presented and tasty lunch was terrific, the theme being – ‘build a bun’. Prize Presentation was a very happy affair, with many thanks to Damien at Umina Podiatry for their continued sponsorship; and also to President Donna, Captain Wendy and the committee for all the preparation required to run events such as these.

We also had the Monthly Medal played on the Thursday of the Champs, Div 1 Medal was won by Mella Weatherstone (71), and Gwen Gray was runner up (73). Div 2 winner this month, and her first medal at Everglades, was Kathy Yewdall (73 c/b), and runner up Ros Ross (73). Div 3 saw Pat Myles as the winner (72), and runner up Judy Anderson (73).

Thank you once again to the proshop for the sponsorship of Darren Chivas Day, single par and 2bbb. Scottie did the honours this year, and presented Gayle Colley with prizes for winning Div 1(+1), and runner up Jenny Simmons (-1 c/b). Vicki Gray won Div 2 (o) and Ros Ross runner up (-1). Veronica Jordan led the pack in 3rd Div (+2), and Pat Myles r/u (+1).
Rhonda Barron & Pat Myles were the happy winners of the 2BBB, followed in second place by Lynette Magill & Stella Hunter.

Truism –
I’m about 5 inches from being an outstanding golfer….that’s the distance my ears!

JUNE 2017

After all the excitement of Championships and the Presentation lunch, this month we had the great pleasure of presenting a cheque for $4000 to our charity, The Shirley Shuttle, made up to that amount by the donation of $500 from the Country Club. Pam Warton accepted the cheque on behalf of the organisation, which was bought to our attention by one of our long standing members, Colleen Guy who has been using this service over many of the past months, for transportation to treatment centres and specialist appointments.

This month the Club Medals were won by Patsy Elliott in division 1 (77 c/b) followed hot on her heels by Heather Burrett. Division 2 saw a very excited Jan Weiley on the microphone after winning her first medal (71), with Marg Hockley as runner up. Susan Bourne was top of the leaderboard in 3rd Division (71),with her good mate Carmel Brown the next place getter.  Also, this month we had a Par and 2B Par event, with Trish Melnik winning Division 1, Judy Andrews Division 2, and Lynette Magill Division 3. Irene Hyland and Jill Fraser won the 2B.

At the time of writing, we are up to the third round of the 2B Knockout, so good golfing to all participants.

The final day of the Interclub Matchplay had Everglades in with a chance to win the season, however this was not to be, and we were pipped at the post by Morisset , who also took out the Margin Shield. Congratulations to Morisset and also to all our women who competed so sportingly in their matches. Next year!

Next on our calendar is our Day of Golf on the 11th July, – the Everglades Salver, Bowl and Longmarkers Cup, sponsored by the House of Beauty at Woy Woy. Hopefully all your entries are in by now. Also, it’s now time for teams to be thinking about fabulous costumes for Xmas in July Mufti Day on July 27th – get sewing ladies!

Enjoy your golf and, appreciate your friendships.

APRIL 2017

Although this is the blog for April, it would be remiss not to mention Malcolm Glase Day played at the end of March in a Par and 2bbb vs Par round. Dr Glase has been sponsoring this day for a number of years, and many of our members in turn have been supporting his skills as a surgeon on their knees and hips – win win! Speaking of wins, congratulations to Kaye McKay, Carol Hartwell and Norma Harris who were ahead of the pack in their divisions, with Heather Burrett and Del Taylor winning the 2BBB.

Unfortunately for finalists Josie Cadden and Hien McManus, the Singles Knockout began on a rain soaked course. While there were not enough players to make up a comp for the daily event, these two intrepid women made the decision to go ahead with their match, which was ultimately decided on the 19th hole with Josie winning her first knockout. Well played.

There was a good turnout for the April Medal, (possibly because the rain had finally retreated), with 91 starters. Also, just to reiterate, as well as playing for the medal, other rounds such as the Goodwill Plate, the Golf NSW Medal and the Shoot Out are all running in the background for those who entered for these at Registration.

Once again Kaye Mckay was atop the leaderboard for Div 1 with a score of 71. Kaye mentioned in her speech, she was going through a ‘purple patch’ at the moment, that she hopes continues! Bobbie Moran won Div 2 with a score of 74, and Rhonda Barron (who is no stranger to the winners’ circle) headed up Div 3 with 73 nett. And, Gwen Gray achieved what most of us could only wish for – an eagle on the 15th hole.

The Everglades Open Charity Day once again thankfully sponsored by Peninsula Village was a great success with a starting field of 120 players from Everglades and other clubs from our district. The game was an Irish 4ball Stableford with each team member allowed an underarm throw out of trouble and a mulligan, interpreted on the day as a free shot – which I imagine all of us were grateful for! Robert Taylor and Shayden Binder did the honours for a $2 hit across the water on the 4th – thanks fellas. The 1st prize winners on the day were Rhonda Wright, Lynnette Magill, Fay Spence and Marg Murray with an amazing score way ahead of the field with 93 points.

We had an array of many marvellous prizes set out most attractively for the raffle, so with the combined proceeds from the raffle and the $2 fourth hole, thank you especially to Gary’s Leading Edge Jewellers of Woy Woy for providing us with a beautiful pendant, won to great excitement by Rhonda Barron. Thank you also to House of Beauty Jewel on the Glades for a generous voucher. Everglades Women’s Golf will be presenting our charity, Shirley’s Shuttle with a cheque upwards of $3,100 with more coming in – a wonderful result. Shirley’s Shuttle is a service on the Central Coast providing cancer patients with transport to attend treatment centres and appointments.

Easter Club Day was fun and thanks to President Donna for providing those of us who attended presentation with plenty of chocolates. Not many takers for golf this day, however the winners were grinners; no more so than Pat Clarke who was jubilant she had won her division after having to contend with second place so many times. Raelene Biddolph came top in Div 2 with Val Stanford winning in Div 3.

Commencing on Saturday 13th May, four lines will be made available each week on the Saturday time sheet at 12 to 12.30pm for our women members. You will also be able to ask a visitor or a man to play. Certainly a boon for the working woman, and those of us who would enjoy a game on Saturday.

Golf is a nice relaxing way to get really frustrated and, super disappointed in yourself’…

MARCH 2017

Our first medal round of the year was played in conditions that made the course feel like a Swedish sauna for 4½ hours, but a least it wasn’t raining! Those who came up trumps on the day were Steph Rapmund (Div 1) who won on a c/b from Hien McManus with 75 nett, Robyn Taylor (Div 2) who also won on a c/b from Chris Cayley with 72, and June Cooper (Div 3) with 75, followed by Merryl Mead with 78. There is no putting comp in the medal rounds this year, instead the committee has instigated a gross ball for each division.

Next cab off the rank for March was the Everglades 60th anniversary celebrations. This was marked by the women with a very enjoyable two day combined 2B aggregate event. Thursday was ‘dress up’ day endeavouring to evoke an earlier era – not very stylish but certainly eye catching, no shorts in those days!Congratulations to Hien McManus and Mella Weatherstone who came up trumps as the winners of the two day combined 2B. In the combined singles, the following ladies came consecutively 1st, 2nd and 3rd – Mella Weatherstone, Pat Clarke & Kaye McKay in Division 1, Marg Hockley, Anne Kane & Del Taylor for Division 2, and Rhonda Barron, Ann Crowe & Rhonda Wright in Division 3. Well played over the two days ladies.

A huge thank you to Patsy Elliott for the mighty effort in the gathering together, collating and writing three volumes of the history of our club. As they said in that ad from another era – ‘we’ve come a long way baby’.

Capping off the celebrations, Sunday 12th began with a shotgun start for the mixed event followed by a cocktail party in the auditorium. According to all who attended, the finger food on the day was fantastic, Patsy was given an award in recognition of her contribution in documenting the history of Everglades. Entertainment by the 3B’s in the evening had the crowd up dancing. Big day, but a tremendous amount of fun.
Suffice to say the weather has been appalling, so naturally no golf, however on the upside, all our waterways are full, the bird life is abundant and the course is as green as it can be.
Malcolm Glase Day (Par & 2B vs Par) was played March 23rd on what bookies refer to as a very heavy track, most of us found it tough going, however, there were some to whom this was not obviously the case, namely – Kaye Mckay who came in square, followed by Trish Melnik with a -1. For Div 2, Carol Hartwell had -2 and Marg Murray – 4. Norma Harris won on a count back of -2 from Fay Spence in Div 3. And, Heather Burrett with Del Taylor got home in the 2B with a score of +4. Good going for those great scores.

Interclub Matchplay (Pennants) begins on March 27th, we have 2 great teams this year, so – Go Everglades!
Just a truism to end with -‘Never try to keep more than 300 separate thoughts in your mind during your swing’! 🏌🏻‍♀️

MARCH 2017

FEBRUARY 2017

Welcome back ladies to the 2017 season, and may the golfing gods give us all, confidence and clarity to play great golf this year!

Opening Day was a great success fielding 92 players, with Wendy White, Carol Hartwell and Fran Slade winning their divisions. Refreshments at Presentation were most appreciated in the form of good old fashioned Pimms and lemonade decorated with various fruits (so you see, a health drink!), accompanied by cup cakes.
Jo Edwards from Edwards Butchers presented the prizes for the hotly contested Summer Cup, congratulations to Lyn McMurray claiming 1st prize, followed by El Presidente Donna, Caro Roope, Ann Meyn, Ann Radford and Heather Burrett. Well played ‘lovely’ ladies.

Also on the day, Vets President Lorraine presented gifts to Pat Myles and Life Member Irene Quintrell on attaining the status of octogenarians. Pat is still playing a very handy game of golf, often up on the winners podium. Patsy had a few extremely amusing words to say about Irene and herself in earlier times – great to hear.

Jan Monty was presented with a badge for a Hole-in-One, which she achieved on a Sunday – ‘goodonya’ Jan.img_2530

I’m sure we are all aware by now of the very exciting 60 years of Everglades celebrations coming up in early March, culminating in a cocktail party after the Men’s vs Women’s mixed event on Sunday 12th with a shotgun start at 8.30. Both committees encourage participation in the day, it will be great fun for all. Our women’s events on Tuesday 7th and Thursday 9th will be a combined 2B aggregate, (with a hope there will be quite a few golfing outfits of the fifties and sixties striding the fairways on the Thursday!)

img_2898Without  any thought to her personal safety, Maggie Coutts gallantly braved the waters on the 4th to retrieve her ball – and this is the result (sans glasses which are gone forever)!

The CCWGA Opening Day was held at Everglades on the 20th, the course was in great condition, as was noted by many players from other district clubs. The Stableford event with 2 scores to count was happily won by a home team – Gwen Gray, Ann Meyn, Jan Patterson and Cathy Yu with a score of 83.img_3085

On a very sad note, Murrell Jarvis passed away on February 8th. Murrell will be very much missed by all of us.💐

Good golfing, and, as a dj on Sydney radio used to say – ‘be kind to each other’.
